Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

The commitment for developing and nurturing global citizens, and equipping pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life, is an integral part of our broad and balanced curriculum at the Valley Invicta Primary Schools. We believe that a high-quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. The curriculum developed by our specialist MFL teacher is shared with all staff and pupils and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills in Spanish.

As a result of learning a new language, we can build a better understanding of the etymology of words. We can help pupils appreciate cross-curricular links with our own English grammar such as verbs and adjectives. Pupils can draw comparisons between their first language and the Spanish language. We expect to build intercultural understanding and respond to native speakers of Spanish speaking countries, both in speech and writing.

Learning a modern foreign language at a Valley Invicta Primary School nurtures our pupils’ self-esteem, confidence and develops strong interpersonal skills. Aside from developing competence in language skills, the curriculum will ensure that our pupils are able to directly link to schools in Spain, and through cultural days, explore a number of other cultures too.

Language learning provides frequent opportunities to perform before an audience, communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Collaborative projects across VIAT schools build on the solid foundation in place, equipping pupils with the skills and passion to continue with language learning in a secondary school setting.
