NPQs for Headteachers and Executive Leaders

The newly reformed NPQH and NPQEL equip new and aspirant Headteachers, Heads of School and Executive Leaders with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to begin and sustain new and challenging roles.

NPQs will enable you to tailor the programme to closely meet your individual needs and be responsive to the context in which you are leading. A highly flexible delivery model with a clear focus on leading and implementing sustainable change ensures that these highly accessible programmes impact directly on your effectiveness as a leader now and in the future. 

NPQ in Headship (NPQH) is suitable for those aspiring to or new to Headship and Head of School roles. Delivered on a regional basis, NPQH enables you to learn alongside colleagues in a range of contexts and settings, sharing expertise and developing peer networks.

NPQ in Executive Leadership (NPQEL) is suitable for those aspiring to or new to executive leadership roles, including as an Executive Headteacher or a Trust CEO. As part of a national community of executive leaders you will access excellent and wide-ranging input and benefit from the opportunity to develop professional relationships beyond your local area or specific context. New Headteacher Support Programme is a fully funded programme for those new to Headship or Head of School positions within the first 2 years of appointment. Designed to be highly personalised according to need and context, the programmes include topic-based training sessions, peer networking, school visits, coaching and mentoring opportunities.

NPQs for Specialist Teachers and Senior Leaders

The newly reformed NPQs introduce new opportunities for professional development within and beyond the classroom, helping teachers and leaders hone and develop their skills.

All NPQs are:

  • Focused on the skills needed to implement and sustain change and improvement

NPQ in Leading Teaching (NPQLT) focuses on what you need to know about and know how to do in order to be the most effective leader of teaching in the classroom and in supporting other teachers to become more effective. The programme is suitable for anyone who leads teaching in classroom, with responsibility for phase, subject leadership and/or for improving practice of others.

NPQ in Leading Behaviour and Culture (NPQLBC) focuses on what you need to know about and know how to do in order to be the most effective leader of behaviour and culture across your whole school, within subject, phase or department. It enables you to effectively support pupil well-being. The programme is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop their specialist expertise in developing a culture and behaviours for learning, in classroom, in phase/ subject, across whole school or group of schools.

NPQ in Senior Leadership (NPQSL) focuses on what you need to know about and know how to do in order to be the most effective senior leader. The programme is suitable for those aspiring to, new to, or experienced as Senior Leaders in a wide range of senior leadership roles. Key is that you have a whole school responsibility. As part of the NPQ Leadership suite, it offers progression to NPQH in due course.

NPQ in Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) Our ‘little and often’ approach uses the latest evidence to help you put your learning into practice in your early years setting. You’ll train alongside other early years leaders with similar responsibilities, focusing on developing your expertise to tackle the persistent problems you face in your role. This is a new NPQ developed by the Department for Education. It was developed with an expert advisory group, and early years leaders, academics and experts. The programme sits alongside the NPQs for teachers and school leaders. Each NPQ shares the same common language and framework to help drive improvement across education.

NPQ in Leading Literacy (NPQLL) will help you learn the essential knowledge and skills to successfully lead high quality, literacy development and teaching in your school. Our approach uses the latest research to help you put your learning into practice. You’ll train alongside other literacy leaders with similar responsibilities.This is a new National Professional Qualification (NPQ) developed by the Department for Education (DfE). Each of the new NPQs share the same common language and framework to help drive improvement across schools and other educational settings.
